Design, Sustainability & Accessibility

Every element of the ship’s design supports safe navigation in challenging environments, active adventures, and wildlife observation. Guests can also take part in educational programs and enjoy a comfortable onboard experience, making the vessel ideal for both immersive learning and relaxing exploration.

Ulstein X-BOW®

Built by Norway’s Ulstein Group, the MV Greg Mortimer: Lindblad is the first passenger expedition ship to feature Ulstein’s groundbreaking X-BOW® design. This inverted bow, already proven on more than 100 commercial vessels, enhances efficiency, stability, safety, and sustainability in challenging waters. Paired with Rolls-Royce dynamic stabilizers, it ensures smoother and more comfortable cruising even in rough seas.

The innovative bow allows the ship to move between landing sites more efficiently, reducing fuel consumption by up to 80 percent compared to older vessels and minimizing environmental impact. Its design also opens up unique viewing opportunities, with windows positioned close to the waterline that let guests see straight ahead and down into the ocean, perfect for spotting whales as they emerge on the horizon.

Multiple observation decks, including side-mounted observation wings, provide unparalleled vantage points for experiencing the environment from the ship. The combination of a slender hull, larger forward volume, and inverted bow delivers improved fuel efficiency, reduced wave impact, softer entry into swells, lower acceleration, minimized spray and slamming, and decreased vibration. Zero Speed stabilizers further enhance comfort, making Greg Mortimer: Lindblad a leader in expedition ship design.

Zodiac Launching Platforms

The Greg Mortimer: Lindblad carries 15 Zodiacs to support off-ship adventures. Guests board these sturdy inflatable boats from four dedicated sea-level launching platforms connected to the mudroom. This setup allows for smooth, safe, and efficient boarding, minimizing wait times so you can spend more time exploring. Whether cruising through Alaska’s fjords in search of wildlife or quickly transferring from ship to shore, the Zodiacs are an essential part of every expedition, providing both access and excitement for immersive exploration.

Activities Platform

Generous gear-up spaces and loading platforms were thoughtfully designed with input from experienced expedition guides. Guests can choose from optional adventures like kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. The ship’s layout is purpose-built to support these activities, allowing for seamless and efficient movement between ship, sea, and shore.

Hydraulic Viewing Platforms

Beyond traditional observation decks, the Greg Mortimer: Lindblad is equipped with innovative hydraulic viewing platforms. Created with input from Greg Mortimer himself, these fold-out platforms deploy in calm conditions while cruising slowly or at anchor. Positioned close to the waterline, they offer clear, uninterrupted views of marine mammals, seabirds, and the surrounding seascape.

Responsible Travel Features

Environmental stewardship is built into the Greg Mortimer: Lindblad’s design. Its highly efficient, low-energy engines deliver up to an 80% reduction in emissions compared to Tier 1 standards. Virtual anchoring technology uses GPS and thrusters to maintain position without traditional anchors, helping protect sensitive seabeds.

Safety Features

The Greg Mortimer: Lindblad is equipped with advanced safety systems that exceed industry standards for expedition vessels. Redundant propulsion and return-to-port technology ensure continued operation in the event of engine failure. Ice Class 1A and Polar Code 6 compliant, the ship meets BV and SOLAS requirements and includes a fully equipped medical clinic for remote-region travel.

Onboard Facilities

The Greg Mortimer: Lindblad’s shared spaces are thoughtfully planned to balance comfort, functionality and scenic immersion. High ceilings paired with broad passageways create an open, airy atmosphere throughout the ship, while a centrally located stairwell and elevator make moving between decks simple and efficient. Sustainability-minded touches like water refill stations help reduce single-use glassware. Throughout the vessel, bold artwork adds character, and select corridors double as informal galleries, showcasing historic imagery, interpretive captions and rotating displays that introduce both guests and crew.

Lecture Theater & Lounge

Expert naturalists, expedition staff, and regional specialists lead informative talks that enrich each voyage. Guests are invited to gather in the lecture theater for engaging presentations on subjects ranging from local history and culture to wildlife, ecosystems, and climate science. Every session is designed to inform while remaining lively and accessible.

The combined lecture theater and lounge is designed to host all guests comfortably, with flexible seating that balances function and comfort. Tiered high-back stools, cocktail tables, and plush swivel chairs provide clear sightlines, while sofas and armchairs positioned along large viewing windows make the space just as inviting between scheduled programs. Multiple screens, a modern presentation podium, and an advanced audio system ensure presentations are easy to follow from anywhere in the room.

Dining, Bars & Lounges

Dining aboard the Greg Mortimer: Lindblad is relaxed and well-suited to days filled with adventure. Guests enjoy hearty, nourishing meals along with morning and afternoon teas throughout the voyage. The main restaurant offers buffet-style breakfasts and lunches, and à la carte dinners.

Large viewing windows ensure the surrounding scenery remains front and center during meals. Tea, coffee, and light snacks are available around the clock. Menus rotate regularly and always include meat, poultry, fish, and vegetarian options, along with a standing selection of made-to-order steaks, chicken, and fish. Complimentary house wines, beers, and soft drinks are served with meals and vary by sitting.

Just outside the lecture theater, the Bar serves as the ship’s main gathering place. With floor-to-ceiling windows, ample table seating, and a welcoming central bar, it’s a lively hub from morning through evening. Bartenders serve a wide range of beer, wine, champagne, and spirits, along with a nightly cocktail special and evening appetizers. Daily happy hour brings guests and expedition staff together to unwind and share stories.

The Bar Deck 7 offers a quieter atmosphere with sweeping 180-degree views through expansive windows. Direct access to the outdoor observation deck allows guests to step outside easily, then return indoors to warmth and comfort. A mix of cocktail tables and bar seating provides unobstructed sightlines in every direction.

At the forward end of Deck 8, an enclosed observation lounge invites guests to relax in panoramic surroundings. The space includes a bar, binoculars, wildlife guides, and books, creating an ideal setting to reflect on the day’s discoveries. On favorable days, the open-air BBQ area on Deck 8 hosts special meals, while two Jacuzzis and two plunge pools at the aft offer a refreshing way to relax between excursions.

Observation Decks

Greg Mortimer: Lindblad offers several outdoor viewing areas ideal for spotting wildlife, enjoying sweeping scenery and taking photos. Observation decks are found on Decks 5, 7 and 8, including sheltered bow-facing platforms on Deck 5 and expansive wraparound teak walkways on the upper decks. Aft Deck 7 provides a generous open-air space for relaxing during calm conditions, while the ship’s hydraulic platforms near the bow deliver up-close perspectives at sea.

Spa, Sauna & Gym

Unwind and recharge between excursions in the ship’s wellness spaces. The spa offers soothing treatments, while a wood-lined sauna with a full-height window provides a warm place to relax with views. A compact fitness center is equipped with weights, spin bikes and treadmills for guests who want to stay active at sea.

Library

Greg Mortimer: Lindblad’s library provides a quiet space to unwind between excursions. It’s an inviting space for reading, reviewing photos, or enjoying a board game with fellow travelers. The collection is well stocked with wildlife references, destination guidebooks, travel writing, historical works, coffee table books, novels, and a small selection for younger readers, so there’s no need to bring your own. Additional wildlife guides and binoculars are also available in the observation lounge on Deck 7 for easy access during sightings.

Mudroom

The mudroom is your base for all off-ship adventures. Guests can stow boots, jackets, life vests, and wet gear in open lockers, keeping cabins dry and clutter-free. Rapid-dry areas make sure wetsuits and drysuits are ready for the next outing. Four dedicated Zodiac launch platforms make boarding quick and easy.

This space also includes bio-security zones for cleaning boots and outerwear, helping protect the fragile environment. With activity prep areas, laser scanning tech, and multiple sea-level boarding points, getting on and off the ship for excursions is smooth and efficient for both guests and the 15 Zodiacs onboard.

Other Facilities

The Greg Mortimer: Lindblad keeps things convenient for all guests with an elevator connecting all six decks. The onboard shop has everything from souvenirs to any last-minute essentials you might have forgotten. Satellite WiFi is available throughout the ship.

The open bridge offers a modern, spacious viewing area for guests to explore. With no seating in the wheelhouse, everyone gets a chance to see the action without lingering too long.

A wide range of included and optional activities lets you make the most of some of the world’s most stunning landscapes, whether on land or at sea.

Standard offerings include shore hikes, small craft excursions, and photography. Optional adventures take exploration further, from sea kayaking, camping, snowshoeing, and ski or snowboard touring (when available) to scuba diving, snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding, alpine trekking, and climbing.
