Sailing Indonesia: Whale Sharks, Corals & Komodo Dragons

Explore Indonesia round-trip from Flores on this 9-day Komodo Island cruise aboard the 24-guest Ombak Putih or 12-guest Katharina traditional Indonesian sailing vessels. Few areas in Asia can match the cultural and natural diversity that’s found following the chain of the Lesser Sunda Islands: towering active volcanoes, jungle-clad mountain ranges and dry savannah lowlands, all teeming with wildlife.

This unique itinerary visits quiet coastal villages, emerald seas, megalithic cultures, bustling colorful markets, tribes and a world of kaleidoscopic beauty underwater. Over the course of your week at sea, look for (and have a great chance of spotting) the famous Komodo dragon, swim with sea turtles and whale sharks, snorkel on pristine coral reefs, hopefully swim with manta rays, take in traditional dances and explore some of Indonesia’s most beautiful deserted beaches.

The journey starts with recommended group flights from Bali to Flores Island, so it makes it easy to explore on your own pre-cruise. For those who want to see even more wildlife, join a pre-cruise extension to Borneo to see orangutans for select departures. And for those who want to go even more remote, look to the 10-day Remote Ring of Fire itinerary sailing between Komodo and Alor. This unique route hits the Komodo National Park highlight but cruises eastward from Flores to explore more authentic parts of Indonesia where people still live life on their own terms, making textiles and fishing using traditional methods. Wake up to a new volcano each morning as you explore their surrounding reefs, see friendly resident dugongs and visit local villages and historic Portuguese forts used in the spice trade.

Passage is aboard the 24-guest sailing vessel Ombak Putih or 12-passenger ketch Katharina. These traditional pinisi-style ships offer romance, Indonesian culture, rustic charm and superior service. These vessels are also AdventureSmith favorites for private charter cruises due to their cozy, inviting feel and size. Complimentary onboard snorkeling equipment, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, fishing gear and tender boats equip guests with daily adventures among a string of Indonesian islands.

Day 1
Bali to Flores & Embark Labuan Bajo

Taking the early morning flight from Bali, you will be met at the Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo by your tour leaders and be taken straight to your boat. As you settle into your new home, the captain navigates to your first snorkeling spot: a coral restoration project where you will see how the corals and fish populations have grown since they were first transplanted in 2014.

Day 2
Komodo Island

Go ashore on Komodo Island in search of the fearsome Komodo dragons, found only in the Komodo National Park. This is the world’s largest lizard, growing up to a length of three metres and weighing up to approximately 70 kilograms.

Enjoy some magnificent snorkeling on some of the Komodo Park’s best reefs. Swim with manta rays as they feed on the current and circle the so-called cleaning stations, where small fish remove parasites from their skin. Snorkel at a favorite hangout of sea turtles, and have a chance to swim with these gentle reptiles as they cruise along the shallow water of the reef.

Days 3 - 4
Island Exploration

Wake up off the coast of a beautiful uninhabited island with a beach of pure white sand with some sparkles of powdered red coral, creating the effect of a “pink beach.” Spend the morning here, swimming, paddle boarding, and snorkeling on the beautiful coral reef that lies parallel to the beach.

Over lunch, cruise to a nearby active volcanic island to see a large wooden pinisi boat with the same pedigree and history of Ombak Putih and Katharina being built on the beach. Walking around this small village, get a feel for their simple way of life, chat with the locals and maybe buy some handmade textiles as a souvenir.

Spend another day at a strange and mystical volcanic island with a sunken crater lake in its center that was filled with saltwater when the nearby Mt Tambora catastrophically erupted in 1815. Here you will swim, kayak and paddleboard on the lake, and the more adventurous can go trekking around the crater rim.

Experience one of the ship’s famous beach BBQs under a night sky filled with millions of stars as you feast on the amazing local delicacies prepared by the onboard chef, and all accompanied by live medical entertainment from the talented crew. Keep your eyes peeled for the sight of thousands of flying foxes that fly at dusk from the island to feed on the mainland.

Days 5 - 6
Whale Sharks & Labuan Aji Village

Take an early morning swim with whale sharks, the gentle giants of the sea. These massive but harmless animals have long congregated here in the bay, but now, thanks to travelers like you, your captain has formed a mutually beneficial alliance with the local fisherman who have their traditional small floating fishing platforms in the bay that attract the sharks. We can’t make any promises since these wild animals are not on a leash, but fingers crossed you will see them.

Then spend the day on a beach located on a small limestone island nearby, kayaking, swimming and snorkeling, and exploring the local karst formations. You’ll also cruise to Labuan Aji village on the island of Moyo to visit the village and walk to a scenic waterfall where you can bathe in the refreshing cool water.

Days 7 - 8
Komodo National Park Snorkeling & Rinca Island

Enjoy a unique snorkeling experience where volcanic gasses escape in the form of bubbles from the sea floor among the corals, with the metallic black volcanic sand below being home to an abundance of very interesting invertebrates.

Entering the Komodo National Park again, go drift snorkeling in one of the best and healthiest coral reefs in the park. And for those who want to take the land adventure to another level, you can do a sunset hike up to a gorgeous viewpoint overlooking the other islands in the park.

Over these days, also visit Rinca Island, which is well known for its diverse wildlife, and maybe spot dragons, monkeys, wild buffaloes and deer as well. From the top of the hills, the scenery is breathtaking.

Melo Village Dances & Disembark Labuan Bajo, Flores, Indonesia

After breakfast, disembark for a short, scenic drive to Melo Village to witness their traditional Caci dance performance. Local strongmen perform a ritual whip-fight between two rivals in which the players, each armed with a rattan shield and a whip, will try to hit each other while dancing to the rhythm of traditional acoustic instruments.

After lunch on the boat, say farewell to the crew and your fellow shipmates as you disembark and continue onto your next destination.
