Day 1
FRI - Embark Baltra to Bachas Beach (Santa Cruz)

Arrive in the morning by plane to Baltra Island and transfer to Yacht Isabela II for cabin assignments, an introductory briefing, boat drill and lunch. After lunch, visit Bachas Beach on the north shore of Santa Cruz Island, a glorious white beach with a couple of brackish lagoons only a few steps away from the sea. These lagoons are the feeding grounds of various wading birds, from stilts to flamingos. Possibly enjoy swimming at this beach too. Back on the ship, settle in with a welcome cocktail, a briefing on the next day’s expedition plan and a delicious dinner.

Day 2
SAT - Cerro Colorado & Punta Pitt (San Cristobal)

In the morning, disembark at Puerto Baquerizo Moreno and drive 40 minutes to the island’s southern shore. At Cerro Colorado, visit the breeding center for highly endangered giant tortoises amid a fantastic deciduous forest, home to dozens of bird species, including the San Cristobal mockingbird, as well as the endemic San Cristobal lava lizard.

In the afternoon, land on the eastern tip of the island. The trail that ascends from the beach provides spectacular views of the shoreline and is the only site in the Galapagos where the three species of boobies can be found together, as well as the two frigatebird species, plus a colony of bachelor sea lions. If conditions are favorable, there is a chance to swim, kayak, or snorkel from the beach or take a panga ride.

SUN - Gardner Bay & Punta Suarez (Espanola)

In the morning, set foot on this beautiful, white coral beach and go on a short walk to observe the sea lions, mockingbirds and finches, or enjoy the beach. There is excellent snorkeling in this area. Kayaking, a panga ride, or a ride on the glass-bottom boat are also offered.

Following lunch on board, begin an afternoon outing at Punta Suarez, on an exciting trail across lava/boulder terrain. Along the way, look for unique sea bird colonies, including the beautiful waved albatrosses, boobies, swallow-tail gulls and the famous blowhole. This island is also renowned for its colorful and sizable marine iguanas. All in all, a wonderful visit.

MON - Cormorant Point, Post Office Bay & Baroness Cove (Floreana)

Disembark in the morning at the curiously green-tinged, olivine-crystal beach that makes for an easy walk to a brackish water lagoon where bird species like American flamingos can be observed. Crossing over to the other side of the island, come to a white-sand beach where sea turtles come out at night to nest. At Champion Islet, choose between snorkeling, a panga ride, or a ride in the glass-bottom boat. After lunch, land at Post Office Bay to visit the historic barrel that has served as an informal post office in the archipelago for over two centuries. Snorkeling off the beach will be offered afterward.

Day 5
TUE - Punta Moreno (Isabela) & Punta Mangle (Fernandina)

In the morning, following a meander through the mangroves in search of sea turtles, disembark amid a landscape dominated by the giant volcanoes of southern Isabela Island, some still active. The rugged trail loops inland from the coast, providing plenty of opportunity to enjoy unique lava formations, pioneer lava cactus and exotic scalesia trees; as well as plenty of wildlife including Galapagos penguins, flightless cormorants, brown pelicans, herons, sea lions, marine iguanas and dozens of Sally Lightfoot crabs. The inland lagoons are home to Bahama-pintail ducks, common stilts, Galapagos flamingos and even Galapagos hawks and mockingbirds. Following the walk, take to the glass-bottom boats or deep-water snorkel.

In the afternoon, explore Fernandina’s coastline aboard pangas. The archipelago’s youngest ecosystem is home to small Galapagos penguins and green-eyed flightless cormorants that rest on the shore’s black rocks. Beneath the waves, rays and sea turtles might glide by. The nutrient-rich waters of the Bolivar Channel, which separates Fernandina and Isabela islands, attract dolphins and whales; with luck, spot them. Depending on sea conditions, end the visit with a glass-bottom boat ride or deep-water snorkel.

panga ride to Eden Islet, located off the coast of Santa Cruz, enables observation of blue-footed boobies, reef sharks and frigates. There’s a chance to snorkel and, if weather conditions permit, to ride in the glass-bottom boat. The volcanic setting of this area is quite stunning. In the afternoon, disembark for a walk along the coast and the interior of the beautiful and flat North Seymour island. Look for numerous nesting frigatebirds as well as land iguanas and sea lion colonies along the coastline. Explore the coast by panga too, seeking out fur seals and enjoying a fun, deep-water snorkel. Complete the day with an evening briefing, farewell cocktail and dinner.

Terms & Conditions

This trip is subject to AdventureSmith Explorations Terms and Conditions. Please read this information carefully and call us if you have any questions. A Traveler Information Form, which includes a release of liability, must be completed and signed by all travelers. Your Adventure Specialist will send you a unique link to complete this form along with a packing list and extensive pre-departure and travel insurance information upon booking confirmation.

Arrival & Departure

Most flights to the Galapagos will depart Quito or Guayaquil between 6:00am and 11:00am on Day 1 and return between 2:00pm and 6:00pm on the final day. We highly recommend travelers arrive to Ecuador two days prior to their Galapagos cruise. If you would like assistance with international flights, please visit our Booking Flights resource page. Note: Your passport must be valid 6 months after your Ecuador trip concludes.

Internal Flights

Flights from mainland Ecuador (Quito or Guayaquil) to the Galapagos are not included in the cruise price, but are arranged for you by AdventureSmith Explorations through your ship. Your Adventure Specialist will book these flights for you on the scheduled Galapagos flight for your particular departure. Airfares vary by departure; your Adventure Specialist will detail these for you in their proposal and on your invoice. On flights from mainland Ecuador to the Galapagos Islands, baggage weight limits are currently 50 pounds for checked items, and 17 pounds for carry-on plus a small personal item. Subject to change.

Activities

There are numerous opportunities to hike, kayak, swim and snorkel. The underwater experience is an integral part of any Galapagos cruise. We encourage all travelers to try snorkeling. Snorkeling gear (mask, snorkel, fins, floating vest and net bag) are provided. Wetsuits are available, either free of charge or to rent for a fee (see Inclusions and Exclusions), and are recommended from June to December.

Daily excursions from the boat to the islands will be made in pangas (inflatable skiffs). Trip members will hike from the landing point to specific areas for wildlife observation. Hiking time for most landings will be a couple of hours round-trip with lots of time to stop to study, photograph and enjoy the flora and fauna. Some landings are dry but many are “wet,” requiring cautious footing on slippery rocks. The boat staff will be on hand to assist.

Room Configuration

Single travelers wishing to book a double-occupancy cabin may do so at a 100% supplement of the per-person listed rate in select cabins upon availability (except in the Standard Cabin, which carries no single supplement). There are no triple cabins for three adults aboard the Isabella II.

Families & Children

Kids 6 years and older are welcomed aboard the yacht Isabela II. Kids under 12 years old at the time of sailing receive 10% off when sharing the cabin with 2 adults (applies only to one child per adult paying full fare). No child discounts apply on Peak Season dates, when an additional fee of $129 (2024) per child is incurred.

Travel Insurance

Protect your travel investment with insurance. Our partners at Travelex Insurance offer a variety of plans and policies to fit every trip and budget. Coverage for a pre-existing medical condition is also available if you purchase the Travel Select plan within 15 days of the initial trip payment; refer to plan details. Learn more about travel insurance or get a free quote.

We strongly recommend that you travel to Galapagos Province with travel insurance that contains medical coverage. Be certain to bring your insurance plan ID documents with you when you travel.

Itinerary Notes

Use the itinerary as a guide only. Itineraries may be altered due to weather, wildlife, national park regulation or at the captain’s discretion. Due to the active nature of volcanoes in the Western Galapagos, alternate excursions may be offered.  The ability to be flexible makes this type of small ship cruising unique.

5-Day North Itinerary

The 5-day Isabela II North Galapagos Itinerary begins with lunch at the Santa Cruz Highlands. After evening embarkation, spend the next 5 days cruising the exciting islands of Baltra, Santa Cruz, Genovesa, Santiago and Santa Fe.

Day 1
MON - Baltra to Highlands & Embark (Santa Cruz)

Arrive at the Baltra airport in the morning and be escorted to the Itabaca Channel and take a ferry to Santa Cruz Island. Take a 30-minute bus ride to a restaurant in the Santa Cruz Highlands for a great introduction to Galapagos wildlife and lunch at a local restaurant. Please dress comfortably upon arrival: wear walking shoes, bring sun protection and a small backpack with any essentials for the day. You will be reunited with your luggage in the evening upon embarkation.

After lunch, drive to a nearby reserve that is one of the best places in the archipelago to see giant tortoises in their natural habitat. The tortoises are easy to spot, lumbering around, munching on grass and leaves, and wallowing in small pools. There are several lava tunnels to explore in the reserve, too. Take a short bus ride Puerto Ayora to board the ship.

Day 3
WED - Prince Philip's Steps & Darwin Bay (Genovesa)

The day kicks off with a panga ride along the cliffs of Bird Island, as Genovesa is affectionately nicknamed, followed by a landing at a steep staircase that connects with a flat plateau. From here, the trail winds its way through large colonies of Nazca boobies, red-footed boobies, great frigatebirds and storm petrels. With luck, be able to spot the short-eared owl. Those who do not wish to disembark can enjoy a longer panga  ride along the cliffs, weather conditions permitting. Snorkeling and kayaking activities are available.

Land after lunch at the beautiful white beach of Darwin Bay. Here, walk amid literally hundreds of birds, most of which are frigatebirds, red-footed and Nazca boobies, as well as gulls, herons, finches and mockingbirds.

THU - Santa Fe & South Plaza Island

This morning, take the dinghy over to the idyllic sandy-white beach  of Santa Fe, populated by colonies of sea lions. Galapagos hawks are often easily observed, perched atop salt bushes. The Santa Fe land iguana may be spotted during this outing. Following the walk, snorkel and swim along a natural wave barrier or ride the glass-bottom boat.

Following lunch and a rest, disembark (dry landing) in the channel of South Plaza Island, whose turquoise waters contrast brilliantly with the white sand and black lava of the shoreline. Beyond, a carpet of scarlet sesuvium succulents serves as a groundcover for a grove of luminescent green prickly-pear cactus. Yellow-grey land iguanas sit beneath these, waiting patiently for pears to drop. Along the coastline find sea lion colonies, while frigates, swallow-tailed gulls and shearwaters glide, playing with the thermals.

SAT - Dragon Hill (Santa Cruz) & Buccaneer Cove (Santiago)

The north coast of Santa Cruz hosts the fascinating landscapes of Dragon Hill. Further inland, the trail offers a beautiful view of the bay and the western islands of the archipelago, as well as the chance of observing land iguanas (for which the visitor site is named, following a concerted effort to conserve them by the Galapagos National Park). After the walk, snorkel from the shore, hoping to spot rays, green turtles and sharks.

After lunch, explore the coastline along the impressive cliffs of Buccaneer Cove, learning about the area’s distant and recent history. The cove is home to a large number of marine birds, sea lions and inter-tidal organisms. Enjoy fantastic natural formations such as the Elephant Rock, The Bishop and an impressive natural cave. SUN - Punta Vicente Roca (Isabela) & Punta Espinoza (Fernandina)

Since there is no landing site at Punta Vicente Roca, explore the captivating coast by panga, seeking out abundant wildlife including colonies of Galapagos fur seals and the nesting sites of Nazca boobies, not to mention flightless cormorants, penguins and marine iguanas. Depending on the conditions of the ocean, possibly to snorkel along the cliffs, hopefully in the company of green sea turtles. Back on board, navigate along the Bolivar Channel, where nutrient-rich upwellings provide fertile fishing grounds for cetaceans.

End the journey on a high note by visiting the island of Fernandina, the youngest island of the archipelago and arguably one of the most pristine ecosystems on the planet. The visitor site of Punta Espinoza boasts a fantastic combination of apparently barren landscapes and abundant wildlife, all dominated by the lofty volcano at the heart of the island. Hope to spot hawks, penguins, vast numbers of marine iguanas and the famous flightless cormorant with its beguiling blue eyes.
