Polar Regions Antarctica Cruise

Realm of Penguins & Icebergs

The Realm of Penguins & Icebergs expedition sails round-trip from Ushuaia, crossing the Drake Passage and visiting the best of Antarctica, including the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula. Highlights include Neko Harbor, Deception Island, Lemaire Channel, Paradise Bay and many other sites. Explore some of the world’s most impressive landscapes via Zodiac and kayak. Experience incredible marine wildlife while paddling through tranquil waters filled with glittering icebergs and porpoising penguins surrounded by magnificent glaciers and mountains.

Antarctic dreams come true on this authentic expedition cruise, aimed at exhibiting the best of Antarctica. The experienced captain and expedition leader decide the itinerary based on weather and ice conditions, adjusting to maximize opportunities to view pelagic seabirds, wildlife-rich waters, feeding whales, seals perched on ice floes and bustling penguin colonies. Onboard presentations and workshops by expert staff add background to the wild and beautiful scenery.

In addition to the main 12-day Relam of Penguins & Icebergs itinerary, there is a 15-day option that aims to cross the Antarctic Circle. Each itinerary is aboard the 114-guest Sea Spirit, a ship boasting an excellent staff-to-passenger ratio of 1 staff per 10 guests, plus every cabin category is a suite, making her an ideal choice for your Antarctica cruise. With expedition leaders who have the field experience of 50-plus voyages to polar regions, included photography lessons and (additional cost) camping and kayaking excursions, this journey to Antarctica is one to remember.

Drake Passage

After passing the islands of Tierra del Fuego, turn south to begin your crossing of the Drake Passage. Watch for humpback and fin whales along the way. Days 5 - 9
South Shetland Islands & Antarctic Peninsula

Within the next days, explore the highlights of the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula. This region contains some of the world’s most impressive scenery and the best wildlife viewing in Antarctica. Sheltered bays and channels sparkle with ice and reflect towering mountain peaks coated in permanent snow and immense glaciers. Icebergs of every size and description complete an image of incomparable beauty. Waters rich with krill are home to huge numbers of marine mammals and seabirds. The whole area is alive with penguins foraging at sea and forming large rookeries at special places on land. Here you also find Antarctic research bases of various nationalities.

The South Shetland Islands are the northernmost islands in Antarctica and will likely be your first area of exploration. This wildly beautiful island chain contains many landing sites with historical significance and abundant wildlife. You will also explore the supremely picturesque Gerlache Strait area of the Antarctic Peninsula, a pristine wilderness of spectacular white landscapes, colossal icebergs, obliging marine mammals and bustling penguin colonies. Hope to see the famous Lemaire Channel, also known as “Kodak Gap” because of the photogenic way the narrow channel reflects the image of sheer snowy mountains.

Throughout this area, find large colonies of gentoo, chinstrap and Adélie penguins, sometimes side by side. This a great time for close encounters with inquisitive penguin chicks, who are now gaining independence as they fledge. This is also the peak of the whale-watching season.

In this rugged yet accessible environment, superb wildlife viewing is best complemented by active adventure. Your knowledgeable guides will offer hiking and hill climbing for an even greater perspective of this raw polar wilderness. For sea kayakers, the wildlife-rich waters of Antarctica offer many chances to paddle with seals and penguins in some of the world’s most scenic waterways. To make the most of your time on the White Continent, you can also spend a night camping ashore, surrounded by untamed Antarctic nature.

This is expedition cruising at its most authentic. Your precise route and exploration opportunities will be shaped by weather and ice. Your experienced captain and expedition leader will continually adjust plans to take maximum advantage of the conditions in this challenging polar environment.
