Elizabeth Bay is located on the east coast of Isabela Island. The bay contains many islets, which can be visited by panga. Penguins and blue-footed boobies can be spotted on the rocky islets. With an abundance of marine life and clear water, the area is perfect for snorkeling and viewing schools of colorful fish, sea lions and perhaps even sharks.

The lava has left craters in its wake which formed crystal tide pools. By looking into the pools, one can peer into another world as the marine life drifts by. In the brackish pools of this area, possibly see pink flamingos, white-cheeked pintails and common gallinules. Look carefully into the pools to possibly see white-tip reef sharks and some sea turtles.

THU - Post Office Bay, Devil's Crown & Cormorant Point (Floreana)

In the morning, land on a beach and head to a spot where 18th century whalers placed a wooden barrel used as an unofficial mail box. The custom continues to this day with Galapagos visitors. So don’t forget your postcards and don’t be surprised if the post card arrives to its destination before you even get home! Next, have a chance to snorkel around Devil’s Crown which is the rocky remains of an offshore volcano sticking out of the water. This is a great location to spot a wide range of marine creatures.

In the afternoon, visit Cormorant Point, host to a large flamingo lagoon where other birds such as common stilts and white-cheeked pintails can also be seen. The beaches on this island are distinct: The Green Beach is named for its green color, which comes from a high percentage of olivine crystals in the sand, and the Flour Sand Beach is composed of white coral.

Terms & Conditions

This trip is subject to AdventureSmith Explorations Terms and Conditions. Please read this information carefully and call us if you have any questions. A Traveler Information Form, which includes a release of liability, must be completed and signed by all travelers. Your Adventure Specialist will send you a unique link to complete this form along with a packing list and extensive pre-departure and travel insurance information upon booking confirmation.

Arrival & Departure

Most flights to the Galapagos will depart Quito or Guayaquil between 6:00am and 11:00am on Day 1 and return between 2:00pm and 6:00pm on the final day. We highly recommend travelers arrive to Ecuador two days prior to their Galapagos cruise. If you would like assistance with international flights, please visit our Booking Flights resource page. Note: Your passport must be valid 6 months after your Ecuador trip concludes.

Internal Flights

Flights from mainland Ecuador (Quito or Guayaquil) to the Galapagos are not included in the cruise price, but are arranged for you by AdventureSmith Explorations through your ship. Your Adventure Specialist will book these flights for you on the scheduled Galapagos flight for your particular departure. Airfares vary by departure; your Adventure Specialist will detail these for you in their proposal and on your invoice. On flights from mainland Ecuador to the Galapagos Islandsbaggage weight limits are currently 50 pounds for checked items, and 17 pounds for carry-on plus a small personal item. Subject to change.

Activities

There are numerous opportunities to swim and snorkel. The underwater experience is an integral part of any Galapagos cruise. We encourage all travelers to try snorkeling. Wetsuits are available, either free of charge or to rent for a fee (see Inclusions and Exclusions), and are recommended from June to December.

Daily excursions from the boat to the islands will be made in pangas (inflatable skiffs). Trip members will hike from the landing point to specific areas for wildlife observation. Hiking time for most landings will be a couple of hours round-trip with lots of time to stop to study, photograph and enjoy the flora and fauna. Some landings are dry but many are “wet,” requiring cautious footing on slippery rocks. The boat staff will be on hand to assist.

Room Configuration

Single travelers wishing to book a double-occupancy cabin may do so at a 70%(2022) or 80%(2023) supplement of the per-person listed rate in select cabins upon availability. Groups of 4-14 passengers will receive a 10% discount.

Families & Children

Children under 12 years old receive 20% off the double occupancy rate. Kids 7 years and older are welcome aboard all departure dates for individual bookings.

Travel Insurance

Protect your travel investment with insurance. Our partners at Travelex Insurance offer a variety of plans and policies to fit every trip and budget. Coverage for a pre-existing medical condition is also available if you purchase the Travel Select plan within 15 days of the initial trip payment; refer to plan details. Learn more about travel insurance or get a free quote.

Note that Galapagos Province requires foreign travelers to show proof of medical insurance coverage for entry. If you are traveling to the Galapagos Islands, confirm with your travel insurance provider that your policy contains medical coverage to meet this entry requirement.  Be certain to bring your insurance plan ID documents with you when you travel.

Itinerary Notes

Use the itinerary as a guide only. Itineraries may be altered due to weather, wildlife, national park regulation or at the captain’s discretion. Due to the active nature of volcanoes in the Western Galapagos, alternate excursions may be offered. The ability to be flexible makes this type of small ship cruising unique.

4-Day South Itinerary

The 4-day Horizon Southern Galapagos Islands Cruise focuses on the central, eastern and southern Galapagos Islands. Embark at San Cristobal, cruise to Espanola and disembark at Baltra Island.

Day 1
SAT - Embark San Cristobal & Interpretation Center

Arrive at San Cristobal Island in the morning. After passing through immigration and baggage claim, be met by a Horizon staff member and transferred to the yacht. Be shown to your cabin where there is time to settle in before lunch and a welcome briefing.

In the afternoon, visit Gianni Arismendy Interpretation Center. This site is part of an environment project. The tour of this center will explore the natural history of the islands including human interaction and conservation efforts. The Museum of Natural History explains the volcanic origin of the archipelago, ocean currents, climate and the arrival of endemic species. The Human History exhibit chronologically describes significant events such as discovery and colonization of the islands.

Day 2
SUN - Pitt Point, Witch Hill & Kicker Rock (San Cristobal)

Pitt Point, situated on the northeastern tip of San Cristobal island, hosts frigatebirds, storm petrels and all three types of booby birds: Nazca, blue-footed and red-footed. A steep trail goes up a cliff and through a ravine leading to an area with an abundance of birds.

In the afternoon, visit Witch Hill. Located on the northern coast, this eroded hill and its surroundings present one of the most picturesque beaches in the Galapagos with its white powdery sand and the abundance of animals. Wildlife includes sea turtles, rays and various types of booby birds. The clear water provides an excellent opportunity for enjoying swimming and snorkeling.

Last, visit Kicker Rock. This striking rock formation is located a couple hours off the western shore of San Cristobal. Jutting out of the water, the rocks stand vertically at hundreds of feet above the ocean divided by a small channel. Although there are no landing areas, circumnavigation and panga rides allow visitors to spot a variety of marine life.

Day 3
MON - Suarez Point, Gardner Bay & Osborn Islet (Espanola)

On the trail to Suarez Point, possibly spot blue-footed boobies, albatross and Nazca boobies. This island is the breeding site of nearly all of the world’s 12,000 pairs of waved albatross. Also visit a beautiful site on the oceanfront where there is a cliff that the large albatross use as a launching pad! Have the chance to see the famous blowhole that spurts sea water into the air. The landscape is great for photography.

In the afternoon, visit Gardner Bay, Gardner Islet and Osborn Islet. This excursion takes you to the spectacular Gardner Bay. After landing, walk across a lovely white-sand beach amongst a busy sea lion colony or dive into the water to swim with sea lion pups. Possibly also see curious mockingbirds on the beach.

Day 4
TUE - Bachas Beach (Santa Cruz) & Disembark Baltra

Bachas Beach is located on the north shore of Santa Cruz and is a beach for swimming. One of the few remnants of the U.S. World War II presence in the Galapagos, a floating pier, can be seen here. Possibly also see flamingos, Sally Lightfoot crabs, hermit crabs, black-necked stilts and whimbrels. Sea turtles also nest on the beach. After this final visit, be transferred to the Baltra airport for your flight back to mainland Ecuador.
