South America Galapagos Islands Cruise

Passion Galapagos Cruises

Originally built as a private yacht, the M/Y Passion has been refurbished to enhance her elegant features for small group Galapagos cruises. Rose-colored Italian marble bathrooms, teak wood decks and a panoramic sky lounge and bar lend a private-yacht feel to her sailings in the archipelago. Measuring 159 feet with four decks and private bathrooms in every cabin, the Passion has ample space for her 14 guests. Add her one-to-one crew-to-guest ratio and this Galapagos cruise will certainly be one to remember!

When combined, the two 8-day itineraries create a 15-day/14-night comprehensive itinerary with no repeated landing sites. There is also a 5-day Eastern Islands itinerary (Saturday to Wednesday) or a 4-day (Wednesday to Saturday); contact AdventureSmith for availability and pricing.

The Passion offers onboard kayak and snorkeling gear for your use, as well as professional Galapagos Islands guides to inform you about the islands’ beautiful and fragile ecosystems. Spend an afternoon whale and dolphin watching while heading out west and discover diverse flora and fauna while visiting the islands of Santa Cruz, Floreana, Isabela, Fernandina, Santiago, Genovesa and more, all from the extreme comfort and refined atmosphere of the Passion.

On the 8-day Western Islands Galapagos Cruise aboard Passion, venture to the Galapagos’s far west, where astute dolphins, enormous whales, penguins and deep-sea creatures head to the wild seaward shores of these special islands, some of the archipelago’s youngest while sailing round-trip from Baltra, visit Santa Cruz, Floreana, Isabela, Fernandina, Santiago, North Seymour and Mosquera.

The 8-day Eastern Islands small ship cruise itinerary aboard the Passion takes you up to the northernmost Genovesa Island, down to Espanola and to Santa Cruz and Santa Fe Islands in between. There is a good chance of encountering giant tortoises in the wild with a visit to the Santa Cruz Highlands, and a stop at the Charles Darwin Station gives you a glimpse at the islands’ diversity of tortoises in semi-enclosed pens for conservation efforts. In addition, the abundance of wildlife will keep you searching for pelicans, golden rays, green sea turtles, great frigatebirds, red-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, blue-footed boobies, greater flamingos, marine and land iguanas, Galapagos hawks and waved albatross. Watch your step! For there are no natural predators in the Galapagos and wildlife is so tame you have to take care that your encounters are not too close.

While each itinerary on Passion is incredible, they’re even more magical when experienced with friends and family. At only 14 guests, Passion is an AdventureSmith favorite for private Galapagos yacht charters.

MON - Punta Espejo (Marchena) & Sullivan Bay (Santiago)

Begin today observing the abundant marine life of Punta Espejo, on Marchena Island. This premiere snorkeling and diving site is reserved for those activities only, with opportunities to see dolphins and hammerhead sharks, as well as a high concentration of coral heads. Enjoy two snorkeling activities here. After snorkeling, return to the yacht for an in-depth briefing about the ocean currents and their effect on the archipelago’s flora and fauna while the ship navigates to the next destination. In the afternoon, make a dry landing in Santiago Island’s Sullivan Bay, where you will walk over a recent lava flow with fresh pahoehoe lava formations, lava bubbles containing crystallized minerals and pioneer plant fossils. Along the shoreline, hope to find Galapagos penguins and herons going after small fish.

TUE - Bartolome & Cerro Dragon (Santa Cruz)

Begin today with a dry landing at Bartolome Island. Climb wooden steps to reach the summit of this spatter cone for a most breathtaking panorama of the islands, well-photographed Pinnacle Rock, views of neighboring Santiago Island and many other central islands in the distance. Afterward, visit the white-sand beach used as a nesting site by sea turtles, followed by snorkeling with opportunities to spot Galapagos penguins. This afternoon, head to Cerro Dragon on Santa Cruz’s northwest shore (dry landing) to visit a saltwater lagoon, home to greater flamingos, black-necked stilts and white-cheeked pintails. Further inland explore a fantastic land iguana nesting site.

Day 5
WED - Puerto Ayora & Tortoise Breeding Center (Santa Cruz)

Spend today visiting Santa Cruz Island´s most famous highlights. Make a dry landing at the dock of Puerto Ayora then head to the island’s highlands. This area, in contrast to the coastal region, has lush vegetation and forest due to the humidity in the higher regions. Visit one of the ranches of the area where it is possible to see giant tortoises in their natural habitat. As these animals migrate from the coastal area to the highlands and back, the chosen ranch will depend on the presence of the tortoises since they roam free and change locations. This is also a good place to see the Galapagos hawk, barn owl and other birds such as the vermilion flycatcher or the yellow warbler that fill the surrounding forests. Enjoy lunch at the ranch then head back to Puerto Ayora for your second visit of the day: the Fausto Llerena Tortoise Breeding Center, where you will see tortoises from different islands. The animals are found in large semi‐natural pens for their protection but also to ensure an easy view for visitors. The pens are divided according to four different stages: eggs, neonates, juveniles (held here until they are mature enough to be repatriated) and adults.

THU - South Plaza & Santa Fe

Begin today with a dry landing on one of the oldest docks of the archipelago: colorful South Plaza is home to vibrant green prickly pears, deep red sesuvium and coppery-orange land iguanas. Impressive seaward cliffs are excellent for observing a variety of coastal birds. In the afternoon, arrive at Santa Fe (wet landing) to look for the endemic species of land iguana, which are larger and more yellow than land iguanas on other islands. The largest prickly pear cacti in the Galapagos are also found here.

FRI - Gardner Bay & Punta Suarez (Espanola)

Spend the day on fantastic Espanola Island, starting with Gardner Bay (wet landing), an outstanding beach with sea lions, marine iguanas and the intrepid Espanola mockingbird. Nearby there is a good spot for snorkeling in Gardner Islet, where playful sea lions might join you. Enjoy more snorkeling at Osborn Islet, a great place to observe large quantities of marine life.

In the afternoon, head to Punta Suarez on a trail that is about 2 miles long for a walk that takes about 2 hours. A geyser near the trail sprays water some 75 feet into the air, making it one of the most popular landing sites in Galapagos. The highlights include sea lions sometimes seen body‐surfing in the large breaks, large marine iguanas with red‐colored males in the breeding season, oystercatchers, blue‐footed and Nazca boobies, Galapagos hawks, Galapagos doves, swallow‐tailed gulls, red-billed tropicbirds in flight, waved albatross who are present only from April to December, Espanola mockingbirds and lava lizard. The last three species are endemic to Espanola Island. The trail ends at “El Soplador” a blowhole that sprays water some 75 feet into the air.

SAT - Twin Craters (Santa Cruz) & Disembark Baltra

After breakfast, disembark in Puerto Ayora to take your transport to the Baltra airport, making a short stop to visit the Twin Craters. Los Gemelos (twins) are two deep craters located to the side of the road that leads to Puerto Ayora from the other side of the island. These huge holes were probably created in a volcanic explosion or by magma chambers underneath the island’s surface. This is also a good place to see the Galapagos hawk and barn owl of this island and the surrounding forests filled with birds such as the vermilion flycatcher or the yellow warbler. The contrast of the highlands vegetation with the arid coastal zones is notable. After this visit head to the Baltra airport for your flight back to the mainland.

Some landings are dry but many are wet, requiring cautious footing on slippery rocks. The boat staff will be on hand to assist.

We strongly recommend that you travel to Galapagos Province with travel insurance that contains medical coverage. Be certain to bring your insurance plan ID documents with you when you travel.

Itinerary Notes

Use the itinerary as a guide only. Itineraries may be altered due to weather, wildlife, national park regulation or at the captain’s discretion. Day 1
SAT - Embark Baltra to Highlands & Darwin Station (Santa Cruz)

Upon arrival at Baltra airport, meet your local representative to board a private van to the Highlands of Santa Cruz Island for the first visit in the Galapagos. The Highlands are lush and green in contrast to the arid coastal vegetation. The highland forests are dominated by the endemic Scalesia tree and are home to many bird species, including the short-ear owl. Here, look for the famous giant tortoises, which are in constant migration from the highlands to the coast.

Then head for the M/Y Passion for lunch on board and to freshen up before heading back to Puerto Ayora to visit the Charles Darwin Station research facility and National Park Information center. The Charles Darwin Station has a giant tortoise and land iguana breeding program and interpretation center. Afterwards, head back to Puerto Ayora, where you will have some time to explore the town and shops before boarding the M/Y Passion at around 5:00pm. Once on board, you will be welcomed by the crew and captain, have a short security drill and enjoy dinner and the briefing for the next day’s activities.

Note: this Western Islands itinerary begins immediately upon arrival in the islands. If possible, please wear clothes comfortable enough for this first visit: comfortable shoes, a sun hat, pants or shorts. You will be reunited with your luggage at around 5:00pm in the afternoon when you board the ship at Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz).

Spend the day on Floreana, legendary homestead of infamous Baroness Eloise Von Wagner de Bousquet. Make a wet landing onto the olivine beaches of Punta Cormorant, where you may spy greater flamingos on your way to another special beach with the finest sand you’ll set foot on, making it perfect for sea turtle nesting and where sharks and rays visit regularly. End the outing with a short panga ride to Devil’s Crown, a key snorkeling site with a completely submerged volcano that has eroded to create the appearance of a jagged crown.

After lunch, visit the freshwater source known as Asilo de La Paz, as well as the caves that served as hideouts for pirates and where the first Galapagueño was born, according to the stories of Floreana, which involve the infamous Baroness Eloise Wagner von Bousquet and her lovers who mysteriously began to disappear after settling on the island.

At Puerto Egas (wet landing) disembark on a dark sand volcanic beach that has history of human settlement. Sleepy Galapagos fur seals lounge under arches of lava carved by the ocean and occasionally dip into the crystalline pools, also known as grottos. Walk along the shore and observe the abundant marine life. Later, at Buccaneer Cove, take a panga ride around the beautiful coastline. This place once was a refuge for British buccaneers who would anchor here to collect supplies and clean their ships, among other activities. The cove is very scenic with views of the cliffs and a dark beach. Do not forget to look for two unusual rock formations known as The Monk and Elephant Rock. After three days exploring the fabulous western islands, head to central Santiago to disembark at Espumilla (wet landing) onto a green sea turtle nesting site with golden-colored sand. A forest trail leads you through some of the largest specimens of palo santo on the islands to observe yellow warblers, the unbelievably tame Galapagos flycatcher and ever‐intriguing Darwin finches.

"Totally Worth It!"

We did the 8-day West Itinerary on M/Y Passion and it exceeded our expectations. Having everything booked and taken care of was amazing and totally worth it! Galapagos has been a place we wanted to experience for a long time and I wanted to do it right.

"Definitely Recommend"

This was the trip of a lifetime and it could not have been better. It greatly exceeded our expectations in every moment from start to finish. I definitely recommend to everyone to do a small boat Galapagos tour. Eight days was just the right amount of time, though we hated to leave!
