South America Galapagos Islands Cruise

Origin, Theory & Evolve Galapagos Cruises

Enjoy a life-enriching adventure that redefines luxury expedition cruising aboard one of the luxury sister ships, Origin, Theory or Evolve. Venture ashore in small groups of 10 to experience these islands up close and personal. Small groups led by expert naturalist guides allow travelers to have a more authentic and educational experience.

The Origin, Theory & Evolve operate two 8-day Galapagos cruise itineraries, which can be combined to create a comprehensive 15-day cruise, or shortened into 7-day routes.

Possible shore excursions aboard the Origin, Theory & Evolve yachts include hiking ancient lava fields where you may encounter prehistoric reptiles; witnessing the courtship dance of the blue-footed boobies; viewing Galapagos penguins, flightless cormorants and massive waved albatross; and exploring beaches of black, red and green sand. Snorkel, kayak or stand-up paddleboard in a marine reserve teeming with ocean wildlife that includes sea lions, dolphins, whales and tame sharks.

Chic, stylish and luxuriously comfortable in equal measure, the prestigious Origin, Theory & Evolve are the only Relais & Chateaux-affiliated yachts sailing the Galapagos. Ecuadorian-owned and operated like floating five-star boutique hotels, they offer an intimate voyage, exquisite level of concierge service, locally sourced and refined gastronomy, and very best amenities the archipelago can offer.

These upscale sister ships are also leaders in Galapagos eco friendly, sustainable travel to the Galapagos Islands. The parent company was the first to earn and maintain the ecological certification SmartVoyager and is Ecuador’s first carbon-neutral cruise operator. Additionally, the Origin, Theory & Evolve all hold Rainforest Alliance verification, offering a gold standard for sustainable tourism.

Origin, Theory & Evolve Galapagos Cruises offer talented naturalist guides, easy nature hikes and snorkeling. Each naturalist takes a group of no more than 10 passengers on all shore excursions and shares extensive insights into the islands’ diverse wildlife and natural history. This uniquely small guest-to-guide ratio is why these ships make our list of Galapagos luxury cruises. Small pangas carry passengers to shore for island visits where you will observe and photograph tortoise, sea lions, blue-footed boobies, volcanic landscapes and vivid sunsets. Families will appreciate select Galapagos family cruises geared towards active travelers with children.

Highlights of the East Galapagos Islands itinerary include visiting the intriguing waved albatross (April-Dec) only found on Espanola and spotting swallow-tailed gulls, the only nocturnal gulls on earth. On Bartolome, feel like you are on a mountain on the moon by summiting a dormant volcano. Get a new perspective with Floreana’s rich human history as well as spend time with the Galapagos penguins, herons and blue-footed boobies. Snorkel the waters around Devil’s Crown, a sunken crater with fish, coral, sea turtles and eagle rays. And send a postcard from Post Office Bay while learning about the unusual postal service of the Galapagos.

Highlights of the West Galapagos Islands itinerary include a coffee tasting on a biodynamic farm; the bird haven of Genovesa with opportunities to search out short-eared owls and frigatebirds; the white sands populated with greater flamingos on Santa Cruz; snorkeling to find penguins and sea turtles and view graffiti left by pirates on Isabela; a visit to the young and pristine island, Fernandina, to observe the largest colony of marine iguanas; and a ramble on the red beaches of Rabida.

At only 20 guests each, with interconnecting and triple cabin options, the Origin, Theory and Evolve are AdventureSmith favorites for private Galapagos yacht charters.

Day 3
TUE - Punta Suarez & Gardner Bay (Espanola)

Today disembark at Punta Suarez on Espanola Island, home to the greatest number of endemic species found in Galapagos. Sea lions bark noisy greetings as you land on the beach, while curious mockingbirds peck at your shoelaces. Colonies of blue-footed boobies engage in sky-pointing to show off for potential mates. From April to December, the waved albatross, found only on Espanola, performs its wild mating ritual. Other easily spotted wildlife are the Nazca boobies busily caring for their young and stunning swallow-tailed gulls, the only nocturnal gulls in the world. You will also find Darwin’s finches, Galapagos doves, red-billed tropicbirds and Galapagos hawks, as well as a unique species of marine iguanas with traces of red and green colorings. Follow the trail to the dramatic ocean blowhole and watch for colorful Sally Lightfoot crabs crawling along the shoreline. Return to the ship for lunch on board.

In the afternoon, disembark at Gardner Bay, where large colonies of sea lions dot the seemingly endless white-sand beach. Enjoy time to take a leisurely stroll or relax on the beach, watching for birds such as the Galapagos hawk, Darwin’s finch, or Hood mockingbird. Swim with the playful sea lions from the beach, explore the bay and islets by kayak or take a panga ride to explore the caves covered with invertebrates. Admire the colorful array of underwater life at the excellent snorkeling site near Tortuga Rock. Return to the ship for a briefing followed by dinner.

Day 4
WED - Punta Cormorant, Devil's Crown Or Champion Islet, Post Office Bay & Baroness Point (Floreana)

Step ashore at Punta Cormorant on Floreana Island, one of the few populated islands in Galapagos with a rich and intriguing human history. The olive-sand beach is alive with the sounds of sea lions, lava herons, yellow-crowned night herons, blue-footed boobies and penguins. Follow a trail to a brackish lagoon, home to Bahama ducks, common stilts, Galapagos flycatchers, yellow warblers and the greater flamingos. Wind your way past a rich variety of plants including the morning glory, cut-leaf daisies, mangroves (black, red and white), palo verde and scalesia. The trail leads to a beach where sea turtles lay their eggs in the powdery sand dunes and sting rays swim in the shallow water. After the walk, there is an opportunity to snorkel at Devil’s Crown, a shallow sunken crater colonized by a brilliant array of colorful fish and coral, white-tipped sharks, sea turtles, spotted eagle rays and sea stars. Lunch is served aboard on the sundeck, weather permitting.

After lunch, visit one of the most famous sites in Galapagos: Post Office Bay, where a post barrel was erected in the late 18th Century for use by English whaling vessels. Visitors are invited to leave a post card and to pick up any mail destined for their home area. There is an opportunity to swim from the beach with sea lions. Day 5
THU - Highlands, Los Gemelos & Darwin Station (Santa Cruz)

Disembark at Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island, the social heart of the Galapagos, with a population of 24,000. Travel by bus to a higher altitude with beautiful geological formations including the lava tunnels at El Mirador and Los Gemelos (the twins), a pair of massive craters. The guides will explain how they were formed. The highlight of the morning is a visit to Rancho Primicias, a privately-owned ranch where tortoises roam free. These slow-moving giants can grow to be over 500 pounds!

In the afternoon, visit the Charles Darwin Research Station, the tortoise corrals and breeding center with hatchlings and miniature tortoises that will be repatriated when grown. Visit the exhibit honoring Lonesome George, a worldwide icon of conservation as the last surviving tortoise from Pinta Island that tragically died of natural causes. There’s another story with a happier ending: Diego, a tortoise from the San Diego zoo, brought his species back from the brink of extinction by fathering hundreds of offspring. Return to the yacht for the briefing and customary delicious multi-course dinner.

FRI - Bartolome & Chinese Hat or Bachas Beach or Black Turtle Cove (Santa Cruz)

Wake up in solitude with no other boats in sight. Choose one of two options for a morning activity on Bartolome Island: a challenging hike or a panga cruise. The 400-wooden-step hike winds past mini lava cones and ends in a panoramic view of Pinnacle Rock. The panga ride around the island looks for penguins. Next, snorkel with schools of tropical fish, white-tipped reef sharks and Galapagos penguins. Return to the vessel for lunch served on the sundeck (weather permitting).

The afternoon itinerary depends on your yacht. Origin guests go ashore at Sombrero Chino (Chinese Hat), a small island off the southern tip of Santiago that owes its name to its shape. Sea lions, marine iguanas, oystercatchers and volcanic rubble await. Theory guests visit Bachas Beach, including a wonderful opportunity for snorkeling after searching for flamingos in the interior lagoons. Evolve guests enjoy a slow panga excursion at Black Turtle Cove, listening for the telltale deep inhale of a sea turtle and watching for the wings of a school of golden rays. A guide aboard each yacht will offer an enrichment lecture on Charles Darwin and evolution or ongoing social/environmental projects, tonight after dinner.

Today’s visit is at South Plaza, a small geological uplift with tall cliffs where swallow-failed gulls, shearwaters, and red-billed tropicbirds build their nests. The trail leads you through opuntia (prickly pear) and sesuvium, and land iguanas are seen feeding on cactus leaves. The island is also home to a colony of bachelor sea lions, with dominant bulls in various stages of recovery from battles over prime beach territory. Return to the ship for lunch as the yacht repositions to anchor between North and South Seymour in deeper water. After lunch, snorkel at North Seymour, a small geological uplift which hosts swallow-tailed gulls, blue-footed boobies, endemic land iguanas and the largest colony of magnificent frigatebirds in the Galapagos. Arrival & Departure

Most flights to the Galapagos will depart Quito or Guayaquil between 6:00am and 11:00am on Day 1 and return between 2:00pm and 6:00pm on the final day. We highly recommend travelers arrive to Ecuador two days prior to their Galapagos cruise. If you would like assistance with international flights, please visit our Booking Flights resource page. Note: Your passport must be valid 6 months after your Ecuador trip concludes.

Internal Flights

Flights from mainland Ecuador (Quito or Guayaquil) to the Galapagos are not included in the cruise price, but are arranged for you by AdventureSmith Explorations through your ship. Your Adventure Specialist will book these flights for you on the scheduled Galapagos flight for your particular departure. Airfares vary by departure; your Adventure Specialist will detail these for you in their proposal and on your invoice. On flights from mainland Ecuador to the Galapagos Islands, baggage weight limits are currently 50 pounds for checked items, and 17 pounds for carry-on plus a small personal item. Subject to change.

Activities

There are numerous opportunities to swim, kayak, stand-up paddleboard and snorkel. The underwater experience is an integral part of any Galapagos cruise. We encourage all travelers to try snorkeling. Snorkeling gear (mask, snorkel, fins, floating vest and net bag) are provided. Wetsuits are available, either free of charge or to rent for a fee (see Inclusions and Exclusions), and are recommended from June to December.

Daily excursions from the boat to the islands will be made in pangas (dinghies). Trip members will hike from the landing point to specific areas for wildlife observation. Hiking time for most landings will be a couple of hours round-trip with lots of time to stop to study, photograph and enjoy the flora and fauna. Some landings are dry but many are “wet,” requiring cautious footing on slippery rocks. The boat staff will be on hand to assist.

Optional rendezvous scuba diving, where a dive operator meets the cruise to take a group out for the day, can be arranged for an additional cost. Diving must be arranged in advance and may be subject to a minimum number of guests. All diving equipment is provided. Dive experience and certification is required. Participating in diving means guests miss the regularly scheduled activities for that day. Contact AdventureSmith for details.

Room Configuration

In addition to listed single cabin rates, select double-occupancy cabins may be available at the standard per-person rate for travelers willing to share with the same gender. Shares that remain unmatched prior to departure are subject to pay the single rate.

Children and teens age 17 years and younger receive a 15% discount off the regular cruise rate. Children age 11 and under receive a 30% discount off the airfare from mainland Ecuador. Special Family Departures are geared toward families traveling with children ages 7 to 17 that include age-appropriate activities and kid-friendly meals. Kids are welcome to visit the bridge and learn about astronomy, navigational charts and tie nautical knots with the captain. Special game nights and events like drawing contests and talent shows are planned. Family teen (ages 12-17) and college (ages 18-21) departures may also be available. Special Family Departures are not recommended for adults traveling without children. Contact AdventureSmith for details and availability.

THU - Punta Espinoza (Fernandina) & Tagus Cove (Isabela)

This morning’s stop is at Punta Espinoza on Fernandina, the youngest and most pristine island in Galapagos, with no introduced animals. Recent lava flows formed by an active volcano stretch their way around the coast. Observe sea lion harems with resident bulls carefully guarding their territory, and hundreds of marine iguanas, the largest colony in Galapagos, basking in the sun along the rugged shoreline. Out on the point, the flightless cormorants build their nests close to shore since they lost their ability to fly. There is a chance to snorkel here with large sea turtles that frequent this area before returning to the ship for lunch.

After lunch go ashore on Tagus Cove, a favorite anchorage for pirates and whalers over the centuries. Sections of the rocky cliffs are covered with graffiti dating back to the 1800s. An optional uphill hike leads to a saltwater lagoon and a scenic overlook with a spectacular view of the ocean, lava fields and volcanic formations. Take advantage of the secluded cove and explore the shoreline by glass-bottom boat, kayak or stand-up paddleboard in search of Galapagos penguins, boobies, pelicans and other seabirds. FRI - Rabida & Puerto Egas (Santiago) or Black Turtle Cove (Santa Cruz)

This morning disembark on Rabida, a small island considered to be the geographic center of Galapagos because its volcanic rocks are the most diversified in the archipelago. The dark red color of the beach comes from the high iron content in the volcanic stones. Follow the trail to a saltwater lagoon where greater flamingos migrate, keeping an eye out for marine iguanas, mockingbirds, yellow warblers and Darwin’s finches. Enjoy a panga tour aimed at spotting mobula and manta rays. Afterwards, do not miss the opportunity to snorkel with a colony of sea lions, rays and white-tipped reef sharks. Return to the ship for lunch.

The afternoon itinerary depends on your yacht. Origin guests take a panga ride at Black Turtle Cove through a series of coves and inlets surrounded by mangroves, to view pairs of mating sea turtles (September to February), white-tipped reef sharks and golden cow-nosed rays. Kids 5 years and older are welcomed aboard all departure dates, however family departures are recommended for young families. Children 4 years and under are welcomed aboard all designated Family departures, as well as exclusive charters. Children and teens age 17 years and younger receive a 15% discount off the regular cruise rate. Children age 11 and under receive a 30% discount off the airfare from mainland Ecuador. Discounts exclude holiday weeks and cannot be combined with other discounts. There is a limit of one discount per youth traveling with an adult paying full fare (two total discounts per family).

Travel Insurance

Protect your travel investment with insurance. Our partners at Travelex Insurance offer a variety of plans and policies to fit every trip and budget. Coverage for a pre-existing medical condition is also available if you purchase the Travel Select plan within 15 days of the initial trip payment; refer to plan details. Learn more about travel insurance or get a free quote.

We strongly recommend that you travel to Galapagos Province with travel insurance that contains medical coverage. Be certain to bring your insurance plan ID documents with you when you travel.

Itinerary Notes

Use the itinerary as a guide only. Itineraries may be altered due to weather, wildlife, national park regulation or at the captain’s discretion. Due to the active nature of volcanoes in the Western Galapagos, alternate excursions may be offered. The ability to be flexible makes this type of small ship cruising unique.

Rates & Dates

Galapagos Cruise Rates & Dates

A 15-day Galapagos Origin, Theory & Evolve itinerary is available by combining the ship’s shorter itineraries. Receive a 5% discount on the second week (excluding Christmas and New Year’s departures). Cannot be combined with other discounts. Additionally, a shorter 7-day option is available on most departures, disembarking Saturday on Baltra. Contact AdventureSmith Explorations for pricing and more information.

"Destinations Were Fascinating"

This trip exceeded our expectations in every way. The destinations were fascinating, the boat was beautiful, the crew was excellent, and the naturalist was outstanding. Every island had something to offer and the excursions were very well planned.

"Extra Special Trip"

Beyond excellent! This was our 3rd trip to the Galapagos and unquestionably the best! Every member of our three generation trip with six adults and five teenager agreed. The activities (hiking, snorkeling, nature observation and learning), and family time on and off the ship were well-balanced. Active and yet some down time on the ship. Perfect...great destination/experiences, superb client service, and attention to details made this an extra special trip.
